I love the holidays! I love Christmas activities, buying gifts for my loved ones, school events, and all that comes with this time of year. However, it is also REALLY easy to get overwhelmed.
Just off the top of my head, here are some of the things I want/need to do this holiday season: Christmas shopping, baking Christmas cookies, seeing Santa, family holiday parties, school holiday parties, school Christmas play, Christmas at the Zoo, local community holiday events, Christmas Eve dinner planning, traveling to see family, secret Santa gifts at work, giving tree at church, food/gift donations for schools, HOLIDAY CARDS (this one stresses me out!), Christmas movies with my kids (can’t miss their favorites Elf and The Grinch!), decorating the house…the list goes on and on.
It’s really easy to get stressed during the holidays, and I think it’s because we try to do everything we possibly can in such a short time frame. But just remember – if you are stressed while you are doing all of these things, then you aren’t enjoying them. And it’s way more important (and fun) to ENJOY the things you are doing during the holidays. Here’s my advice – make a list. Prioritize what you HAVE to get done by importance. For instance, gifts always come to the top of my list, because I can’t NOT get gifts for my loved ones (plus I love Christmas shopping). However, getting pictures with Santa fell to the bottom of my list last year and guess what? We didn’t do it. I know, what?! But you know what? My kids were at an age where I knew it wouldn’t matter. Also, we started combining some of these things. At our family get-togethers, we all pitch in and have a Santa come to visit the kiddos, so really my kids DID get to see Santa, and it was easier on me because I didn’t have to spend an hour in line one weekend to do it!
My point is – look for ways to make things easier on yourself. If baking cookies is one or your most important traditions, keep it at the top of your list! But don’t feel bad if you don’t get to every holiday event going on around town! Your kids will remember the fun, stress-free times you had at home, school, or wherever! They will remember YOU being with them…not how many times they saw Santa in one season!
